The Creation
Lab created diamonds are grown in laboratories and have essentially the same chemical composition, crystal structure and optical and physical properties as natural diamonds; they are carbon atoms arranged in a cubic crystal structure. Lab-grown are real diamonds, not fakes, but they aren't exactly the same as mined diamonds. While natural diamonds were formed millions to billions of years ago, deep inside the earth, lab grown diamonds are created in a laboratory and are grown in a matter of days or weeks.
The growth process of lab created diamonds is similar to natural diamond growth, and therefore there are still variations in color and clarity. This means that lab-grown diamonds are not all colorless and flawless as one might suspect. And just as earth-mined diamonds are graded by independent gemological laboratories (i.e. GIA) for the Four C's of carat, color, clarity and cut, so are lab-grown diamonds.
